Everybody loves free stuff. Getting free stuff is great. Giving free stuff is great too. Who doesn’t like to be Santa? Who doesn’t like to give something to someone and watch them cheer up as a result? To see the smiles on their faces, to see them get a little bit happier, even if just for a moment, because someone gave them something. Free giving is fantastic. Some people like it even more than free getting.
The best free stuff to give and get is love, real love: the no-strings-attached kind of love; the kind of love that isn’t grabby, possessive, or in any way motivated by self-gain. We don’t mean promiscuity either. We don’t mean any of that cheap stuff. We mean real love: human, personal, real. THAT kind of love is making someone warmer in their heart, whether or not they got something material. To give that kind of love is like being Santa even when it’s not Christmas. It’s recognition, a sense of being known as someone good, someone worthy of attention, even if they feel down in the dumps, or have been naughty. It’s not a reward for good behavior, it’s a gesture of seeing their heart and putting faith in their goodness. Great stuff! And you can only get it for free, and give it for free. Doesn’t cost anything and it can sure make a big difference.
People need to be reminded that they are good, even if they don’t act as their true heart. It’s in there, and if you can see it, you can bring it out. If you can bring it out, they can experience it. Then they have proof of their goodness. Score one for the heart. A point for love, for life, for true human nature.
